Funny, tender and group challenges, from the drinks reception to the dance floor, with everything you need to know to make your guests want to play.

Contents
A wedding photo challenge is a small prompt for your guests: "clink glasses with someone you didn't know this morning", "three generations of one family together". Everyone snaps the photo on their own phone, and your day fills up with introductions, giggles and pictures your photographer could never have taken alone. Below you'll find 100 wedding photo challenge ideas sorted by moment of the day, followed by practical advice on choosing them, handing them out and writing your own.
Why a wedding photo scavenger hunt works so well
A wedding brings together people who don't know each other: two families, school friends, colleagues, cousins who flew in for the weekend. Everyone wants to mingle, nobody wants to be the first to walk up to the next table. A challenge gives them the excuse. "Sorry, I need someone born the same year as me" starts more conversations than an hour of small talk at the bar.
A photo challenge also has three qualities few wedding activities share:
- No kit required. Your guests already have a phone in their pocket.
- Anyone can play, at any age. Grandma doesn't need a smartphone: her grandson holds the phone, she strikes the pose. Teenagers finally have something to do.
- It leaves you a keepsake. A wedding photo scavenger hunt also means hundreds of pictures taken from your guests' point of view: the tables you never reached, the backstage moments, your faces as you cut the cake.
Looking for other ways to get the room playing (quizzes, guest books, table games)? We have rounded up 30 wedding games for guests too.
How to choose and pace your challenges
A good wedding photo challenge list doesn't need to be long. It needs variety, and each prompt needs to land at the right time.
Mix the tone
Challenges fall into three families, and a good programme borrows from all three:
| Tone | Example | What it brings |
|---|---|---|
| Heartfelt | "The couple who have been married the longest" | Emotion, grandparents in the spotlight |
| Funny | "Every pair of shoes at your table, under the table" | Laughter, whole tables on their feet |
| Group | "A photo with the whole table next to yours" | Families actually mixing |
A reserved family will enjoy mostly heartfelt prompts. A group of friends who go back to school days can handle sillier ones. When in doubt, go half and half.
Match the moment
A dance challenge falls flat during the starters. Think about what your guests are actually doing:
- Ceremony: quiet, observational prompts (the rings, the bouquet, the confetti exit). Many couples prefer an unplugged ceremony; if so, start the game straight afterwards.
- Drinks reception: the moment for introductions. Guests are standing, moving around, often slightly at a loose end. For more ideas, see our guide to cocktail hour entertainment.
- Dinner: table challenges, done from your seat or with a quick visit to the next table between courses.
- Cake: one or two challenges at most; everyone is already gathered round.
- Evening: dance floor prompts, on the move, with the DJ or the band.
How many challenges?
For a typical wedding day, about a dozen is plenty. Beyond twenty, fatigue beats enthusiasm. One challenge every forty-five minutes or so works far better than a list of fifty prompts nobody will finish.
Cards, a sign or phones: how to hand out the challenges
There are three ways to give your guests their challenges. None is perfect, so here is an honest comparison.
| Method | The good | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Printed challenge cards on the tables | Pretty, easy to personalise (a Canva template will do), nothing to explain | Guests read every prompt at once; photos stay on their phones and have to be chased afterwards |
| A sign or board at the entrance | One thing to prepare, visible to all | Few people stop to read it; same problem collecting the photos |
| Challenges sent to phones at surprise times | One challenge at a time, the element of surprise, every photo gathered in one album | You need a tool, and a little signal (or the venue's Wi-Fi) |
Printed cards keep all their charm for a small wedding, or if you want a free, homemade printable. Their weak spot is the morning after: you will be chasing photos through a WhatsApp group or a shared album. Our guide to the wedding QR code photo album compares the options.
The third method is the one Clinkpop uses. Guests scan the QR code on the table card and play in their browser, with nothing to install and no account to create: a first name is all it takes. Challenges drop at surprise times, every 45 minutes by default, on every phone at once. You only see other people's photos once you have sent your own, and the next morning you receive the album, sorted by challenge.

Writing your own photo challenges
The best prompts are often the ones only your nearest and dearest will get: "a photo with Uncle James", "the old rugby crowd, all together". A few rules so they make everyone laugh.
What works
- A short prompt, readable in three seconds, starting with what to photograph.
- A challenge for several people. It sends guests off to find someone, so nobody is left alone with their phone.
- Something doable in ten minutes, at the venue, with whatever is at hand.
- A nod to your story: the city where you met, your favourite dish, a best man's obsession.
What to avoid
- Nothing aimed at children. Never ask guests to photograph a child. Parents should decide about their own children's pictures; in France, a law of 19 February 2024 even writes it into the civil code. At a wedding, that simply means not photographing other people's children without their parents' consent. More in our guide to wedding photo consent.
- Nothing about drinking. "Most shots in one photo" rarely ends well, and some guests don't drink.
- Nothing about age or looks. "The oldest", "the tallest", "the baldest": funny for whoever wrote it, less so for whoever is singled out. "The couple married the longest" beats "the eldest guest".
- Nothing humiliating, no forfeits. This is not a stag or hen do. If a photo might embarrass someone the next day, drop it.
With Clinkpop you can write up to five challenges of your own on top of the ready-made programme. A filter keeps out crude words; for the rest, we trust you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a wedding photo challenge?
It is a photo prompt given to guests during the wedding: clink glasses with a stranger, gather three generations, recreate the couple's pose. Guests take the picture on their phones, and the couple collects every image afterwards. Think of it as a wedding photo scavenger hunt, only simpler.
How many photo challenges should we plan?
Around a dozen for a typical day, from the end of the ceremony to the middle of the evening. Past twenty or so, guests lose interest. Spread them out: a few at the drinks reception, a few at dinner, one for the cake, the rest on the dance floor.
Where can I find a printable wedding photo challenge list?
You can use the list on this page as it is: pick your challenges, copy them onto cards (a Canva template works well) and place them on the tables. Just plan how you will collect the photos afterwards, for example with a shared album and a QR code.
How do we collect the photos from the challenges?
With printed cards, you need a shared album (Google Photos, a WhatsApp group) and a few reminders, because many guests forget to send their pictures. With Clinkpop, each photo is sent during the challenge and saved in your private album with its author's first name, ready to download the next morning.
